If catching a plate matters to you — and for vehicle theft, yard access or driveway incidents it usually does — this needs to be designed in from the start.

Why can't a normal camera read a plate at night?

Three separate problems stack up, and each one alone is enough to ruin the image.

Number plates are reflective. UK plates are designed to bounce light back. When a camera's infrared night vision hits one, it reflects so strongly that the plate whites out completely — you get a bright rectangle where the characters should be. The better the camera's infrared, the worse this often gets.

Headlight glare dazzles the sensor. A vehicle approaching with headlights on floods the camera, and the plate sits in the darkest part of an image the camera has already exposed for the brightest part.

Moving vehicles blur. Cameras that produce good colour images at night do it partly by using slower shutter speeds to gather more light. A slow shutter and a moving car means motion blur, and fine detail like plate characters is the first thing lost.

Resolution doesn't fix any of these. A 4K camera mounted too far away, or pointed at a moving vehicle with the wrong shutter speed, still produces an unreadable plate.

What does an ANPR camera do differently?

A dedicated ANPR or LPR (number plate recognition) camera is set up specifically to solve those three problems. It uses a very fast shutter speed to eliminate motion blur, and carefully controlled infrared illumination and exposure tuned to the reflectivity of a plate rather than to the scene as a whole.

There's a trade-off that's worth understanding: because the exposure is optimised for the plate, the rest of the image goes very dark. An ANPR camera produces a crisp, readable plate and almost nothing else — no colour, no clear view of the driver, no detail of the vehicle.

Which is why they're normally installed in pairs. An ANPR camera captures the plate; a standard overview camera alongside it captures the vehicle, the colour, and the people. One tells you which vehicle. The other tells you what happened. Installing only one of the two is the most common mistake on this kind of job.

Where should a plate camera be positioned?

Positioning matters as much as the camera itself. A plate camera needs to be mounted at the right height and angle, tightly framed on the point vehicles pass through — a gateway, an entrance, the end of a drive — and set for the speed vehicles will be travelling at. The tighter and more predictable that point, the better the results.

This is why a gate or single entrance is the ideal place for ANPR, and why "point it at the yard and hope" doesn't work.

How do I protect vehicles on a drive or yard?

Plate capture is one part of it. A vehicle protection setup that actually works usually combines:

Lighting. Motion-triggered lighting across the parking area. It improves every camera's performance, and it's a deterrent in its own right — people intending to interfere with a vehicle strongly prefer darkness.

An overview camera positioned to capture the vehicle and anyone approaching it, with enough resolution and close enough range to identify a face rather than just a figure.

A plate camera at the entrance or gate if identifying vehicles matters.

Detection and alerts so you know at the time rather than the following morning. On yards, this is often the difference between a recovered vehicle and a police report.
